New player protection
Your first ten minutes of play are safe from PvP. How the protection works and how to remove it.
Contents
Joining a PvP server and getting killed before taking three steps is no fun. So every new player gets protection against PvP for their first 10 minutes.
What the protection does
- other players cannot hurt you: a player who hits you gets a message telling them you are protected;
- a green "Newbie Protection" boss bar shows how much time you have left;
- your protection is saved: a server restart does not erase it. To check the time left at any
moment, type
/newbie checktime.
What it does not do
- it only protects you from players: mobs, falling, lava and drowning remain dangerous;
- you can still pick up items and place and break blocks normally.
Hitting someone while protected
While your protection is active, you cannot attack other players either: the game reminds you that you are protected and tells you how to remove it. Combat goes both ways.
Removing your protection early
Feel ready? Type:
/newbie disable
The protection is removed immediately and does not come back: from then on, you are a player like any other.
| Command | Effect |
|---|---|
/newbie checktime | Shows how much protection time you have left. |
/newbie disable | Permanently removes your protection. |
The command also has the alias /grace.
Making the most of your ten minutes
Use your protection to get away from the arrival point, find a quiet spot and gather something to defend yourself with. Starting tips are in /wiki/start-in-5-minutes.
When the protection ends, a message warns you that you can now be attacked. Keep the combat tag in mind, and what a death costs (/wiki/death).
